3rd Grade Summer Reading Camp

Posted Date: 04/16/26 (11:20 AM)

Greetings -

We have some questions regarding 3rd Grade Summer Reading Camp.  As such we wanted to provide some information and updates regarding this program.

To be promoted to grade 4, a 3rd grade student must score Level 2 or higher on the grade 3 statewide, standardized ELA assessment required under s. 1008.22, F.S. If a student’s reading deficiency is not remedied by the end of grade 3, as demonstrated by scoring Level 2 or higher on the grade 3 statewide, standardized ELA assessment required under s. 1008.22, F.S., the student must be retained. However, students who score Level 1 on the grade 3 statewide, standardized ELA assessment during Progress Monitoring (PM) 3 will be provided an additional opportunity to test in the summer . A score of Level 2 or above on the summer administration of the grade 3 statewide, standardized ELA assessment can also be used for promotion purposes.

These retained third grade students must be provided intensive interventions in reading to ameliorate the student’s specific reading deficiency and prepare the student for promotion to the next grade. These interventions must include participation in the school district’s Summer Reading Camp, which must incorporate evidence-based, explicit, systematic and multisensory reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and other strategies prescribed by the school district. School districts must provide intensive interventions through Summer Reading Camps to students in grade 3 who score Level 1 on the statewide, standardized ELA assessment.

The purpose of this message is to let you know that Liberty County School District will provide Summer Reading Camp this summer at W.R. Tolar School for all 3rd grade students in Liberty County that scored a level 1 on PM3 of the F.A.S.T. ELA Assessment.  The summer dates for this program are as followed:

--> June 8th - June 25th
--> OFF the week of June 29th
--> July 6th - July 23rd
--> Program is 6 weeks
--> Monday - Thursday (no Fridays)
--> 8AM - 12PM each day

Students will have the chance to test the first week using STAR Reading.  If a passing score is achieved, they will no longer need to attend.  However, it a passing score is not met at that time they will  have to attend the duration of the Summer Reading Camp.  Students who have not passed at that time will take the 3rd F.A.S.T. ELA assessment during the week of July 20th in an attempt to achieve the necessary score for promotion.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have further questions.  You can also call the Guidance Counselor at your school for information.  Thank you for our continued partnership.
